What PMJDY Is

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) is a financial inclusion programme launched on 28 August 2014. The goal was simple: give every Indian household at least one bank account. Before PMJDY, roughly half of India's adult population had no access to formal banking — no savings account, no way to receive government payments, no insurance.

Today, over 58 crore accounts have been opened under PMJDY, with over ₹3 lakh crore in deposits. It's become the backbone of direct benefit transfer — government subsidies, MNREGA wages, PM-KISAN instalments, and emergency relief all flow through PMJDY accounts.

What You Get With a PMJDY Account

BenefitDetails
Zero-balance savings accountNo minimum balance required, ever
RuPay debit cardWorks at ATMs and point-of-sale terminals across India
Accidental insurance₹2 lakh cover for accounts opened after 28 Aug 2018 (₹1 lakh for earlier accounts)
Life insurance₹30,000 for accounts opened between 28 Aug 2014 – 31 Jan 2015 (for eligible beneficiaries)
Overdraft facilityUp to ₹10,000 after 6 months of satisfactory account operation
Access to pension, insurance, creditAccount becomes the gateway to APY, PMSBY, PMJJBY, and Mudra loans

The overdraft of ₹10,000 is available to one account per household — typically the woman of the household gets preference. No collateral needed.

Who Can Open an Account

  • Any Indian resident aged 10 years and above
  • No income proof required
  • No minimum deposit to open
  • If you already have a bank account elsewhere, you can still open a PMJDY account but the overdraft and insurance benefits apply to only one account per household

For those without standard KYC documents, banks accept a "Small Account" under simplified KYC — valid for 12 months, extendable.

Documents Needed

With Aadhaar: Just Aadhaar. It serves as both identity and address proof. Account can be opened same day.

Without Aadhaar (alternative KYC):

  • Voter ID card / Driving Licence / PAN card / NREGA job card / Government-issued photo ID, plus
  • One address proof document

Insurance Benefits — How They Work

Accidental Insurance (₹2 lakh): Covered under the RuPay card. The card must have been used at least once in the 90 days before the accident. Claim through the bank where the account is held — family members submit death/accident certificate and bank forwards to insurance company.

Life Insurance (₹30,000): Only for accounts opened in the first phase (Aug 2014 – Jan 2015) by individuals aged 18–59 who were not beneficiaries of other government life insurance. This benefit has largely run its course for new accounts.

Overdraft — What You Need to Know

The ₹10,000 overdraft is not automatic. Requirements:

  • Account must be at least 6 months old
  • Satisfactory operation (regular credits, no defaults)
  • One household member only (priority to women account holders)
  • Repayment expected within a reasonable period — it's a short-term credit facility, not a loan with EMI

Banks have discretion in sanctioning. If your account has had government benefit transfers coming in regularly, your chances of getting the overdraft approved are higher.

Bank Mitra — Banking Without a Branch

In areas without bank branches, PMJDY operates through 13.55 lakh Bank Mitras (banking correspondents) — individuals authorised to provide basic banking services in villages and remote localities. They carry a handheld device to process deposits, withdrawals, and transfers.

If you're in a rural area and the nearest bank branch is far, look for a Bank Mitra in your area. You can deposit, withdraw, and check balance without visiting a branch.

How to Open an Account

  1. Visit any bank branch — public sector, private, or regional rural bank
  2. Fill the PMJDY account opening form (available at branches, free)
  3. Submit Aadhaar (or alternative KYC documents)
  4. Provide a passport-size photo
  5. Account opens same day in most cases with Aadhaar e-KYC

You can also open an account through the bank's mobile app if you have basic KYC documents ready.

Common Questions

I already have a regular savings account — can I still use PMJDY benefits? The RuPay card insurance and overdraft facility are specific to PMJDY accounts. Your regular account doesn't carry these benefits automatically.

Does the zero-balance rule really hold? Yes. Banks cannot charge minimum balance penalties on PMJDY accounts. This is regulated — if a bank charges you, you can complain to the Banking Ombudsman.

How do I check if my account has PMJDY status? Ask your bank or check your passbook/account statement. PMJDY accounts are marked as "BSBD" (Basic Savings Bank Deposit) accounts.

Can a minor open a PMJDY account? Yes, with a guardian. Minors aged 10+ can independently operate accounts with simplified KYC.
