What This Is
UPSSSC Lower PCS fills Group B non-gazetted and Group C posts in UP state government — Revenue Inspector, Supply Inspector, Forest Guard, Supervisor, Junior Assistant, and similar posts. It's different from UPPSC PCS, which recruits for higher-level gazetted positions like SDM and DSP. If you want a UP government job at the sub-district/field level without the gruelling UPPSC marathon, Lower PCS is the practical route.
One important thing before you do anything else: you need a valid UPSSSC PET score to apply. PET (Preliminary Eligibility Test) is a separate gateway exam UPSSSC introduced in 2022. Without it, your application won't go through. If your PET score has expired or you haven't appeared yet, clear that first.
Posts Covered
The Lower PCS notification covers several posts across UP departments. Common ones include:
| Post | Department |
|---|---|
| Revenue Inspector | Revenue |

| Supply Inspector | Cooperative |
| Supervisor (Male/Female) | Women & Child Development |
| Forest Guard / Van Daroga | Forest |
| Junior Assistant / Clerk | Various |

Exact posts and vacancies are in the official advertisement on upsssc.gov.in.

Exam Pattern
| Section | Questions | Marks | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Hindi | 25 | 50 | 2 hours |
| General Knowledge / GS | 25 | 50 | |
| Reasoning & Mental Ability | 25 | 50 | |
| Numerical Ability | 25 | 50 | |
| Total | 100 | 200 |
Negative marking: 0.25 per wrong answer. The paper is in Hindi. Each question carries 2 marks, so accuracy matters more than raw attempt count.
What the Syllabus Actually Tests
General Hindi is not just vocabulary. Expect grammar-heavy questions — sandhi, samas, karak, vibhakti, alankar, ras, chand. If your Hindi grammar is rusty, this section will cost you. Use Hardev Bahri's reference grammar alongside standard notes.
General Knowledge in UPSSSC exams is distinctly Uttar Pradesh-flavoured. Questions on UP history (especially Awadh, Kashi, and the 1857 revolt in UP), UP rivers and geography, UP government schemes, UP culture and folk arts, and famous personalities from UP appear regularly. National-level GK books cover maybe 40% of what UPSSSC actually asks. A dedicated UP GK book is not optional.
Reasoning is standard: series, analogy, coding-decoding, direction, blood relations, Venn diagrams, non-verbal. Practise for speed — 25 reasoning questions in 30 minutes is a reasonable target.
Numerical Ability is Class 10 maths: percentage, ratio, profit/loss, SI/CI, time-work, mensuration. Nothing advanced, but you need to be quick.

Preparation Reality Check
- PET first, everything else second. If your PET is expiring soon, renew before focusing on mains preparation.
- UP GK is the section that separates ranks. Most candidates preparing from generic books score similarly on reasoning and maths. UP-specific knowledge is where toppers pull ahead.
- Practise previous UPSSSC papers — VDO (2022), Lekhpal (2021–22), and Supply Inspector papers from recent years closely match the Lower PCS pattern. Solve 5–6 full papers under timed conditions.
- Hindi grammar needs dedicated time. Don't leave it to the last week. Put aside 30 minutes daily for Hindi grammar practice from Day 1.
Common Questions
Is UPSSSC PET the same as the Mains exam? No. PET is a separate eligibility test you clear before applying for specific UPSSSC exams like Lower PCS. PET marks are not used in final merit.
Can candidates from other states apply? Yes, but age relaxation and fee concessions only apply to UP domicile holders for their respective categories.
Is there an interview? No interview for Group C posts.
How long is PET score valid? One year from the date of the PET result.
